Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs has announced plans for the resumption of direct air services between India and China, expected to take place later this month. This service had been suspended for the past five years.

The halt in air travel was initiated in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it remained suspended in light of ongoing tensions stemming from the border dispute in Eastern Ladakh.

The Ministry of External Affairs revealed on Thursday that discussions at a technical level between the Civil Aviation Authorities of both nations have been ongoing since the beginning of this year. These discussions are focused on the revival of direct air services and the revision of the air services agreement, which is part of India’s broader strategy to normalize relations with China.

It has been agreed that direct air services linking various destinations in India and China will resume by the end of October, contingent upon the operational decisions made by the respective carriers of both countries and compliance with all necessary operational criteria.

The statement issued noted, “This agreement between the civil aviation authorities will further enhance public relations between India and China, thereby contributing to the ongoing normalization of bilateral exchanges.”

During a meeting in Tianjin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in discussions aimed at fostering dialogue, building trust, and prioritizing regional cooperation between their nations. The primary objective of this meeting was to fortify bilateral relations and advance the recent progress made in India-China interactions.
