Sharad Purnima 2025: The festival of Sharad Purnima holds significant importance in Hinduism. It is also referred to as ‘Kojagari Purnima’ or ‘Rasa Purnima.’ On this day, the moon is believed to be at its full glory, embodying sixteen unique qualities. It is said that the rays of the moon shower down nectar, prompting the tradition of placing kheer (a rice pudding) under the open sky to absorb this celestial essence, which is later consumed as prasad the following day.
In 2025, Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on Monday, October 6. However, many individuals are unaware of the correct practices surrounding the placement of kheer in the moonlight and the optimal time for its retrieval. According to religious beliefs, consuming this kheer is thought to bring health and prosperity. In this article, we delve into the insights provided by Astrologer Pandit Dayanand Tripathi regarding the right timing and guidelines for collecting the kheer exposed to the moonlight.
Dates and Auspicious Timing for Sharad Purnima 2025
According to the Hindu calendar, the Purnima (full moon) of the month of Ashwin will commence on October 6, 2025, at 12:23 PM and conclude on October 7, 2025, at 9:16 AM. Therefore, the festival of Sharad Purnima will be observed on the 6th of October.
On this day, the moonrise is expected around 5:31 PM. However, the period of Bhadra (a time believed to be inauspicious) will last until 10:53 PM. Consequently, it is considered appropriate to place the kheer only after this Bhadra period has ended. The auspicious moment for placing kheer will be after 10:54 PM.
When Should the Kheer Be Removed from the Moonlight?
To harness the benefits of the moon’s nectar-like rays on Sharad Purnima, kheer is traditionally left under the moonlight throughout the night. It is noteworthy that the moon on this night is considered particularly auspicious, as it is believed to be endowed with sixteen divine qualities.
The kheer should be placed outside after the moon has risen, specifically after the conclusion of Bhadra, which means you should place it after 10:54 PM on October 6. It is advisable to cover the kheer with a mesh cloth or a sieve to protect it from insects.

What is the Correct Time to Remove the Kheer?
According to scriptural texts and traditions, the kheer placed in the moonlight should be removed before sunrise the following morning. The most favorable time for this is considered to be during Brahma Muhurta, which occurs around 4 AM. It is essential to ensure that the rays of the sun do not touch the kheer; otherwise, the beneficial effects of the moonlight may diminish.
Offering Kheer to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi
After retrieving the kheer, the first step should be to offer it as bhog (food offering) to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. This act is believed to alleviate ailments and bring happiness, prosperity, and tranquility into one’s life. Furthermore, it is said to help in dispelling mental worries.
