Why is World Environment Day Celebrated Specifically on June 5?
The date June 5 holds historical significance. It was on this day in 1972 that the United Nations General Assembly hosted the first global conference on the environment in Stockholm, famously known as the Stockholm Conference. Representatives from several countries came together to discuss environmental concerns on a global scale.
That conference led to the formation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and established June 5 as World Environment Day—a date now recognized around the globe for reflection, education, and action on environmental issues.
